Nice work!! Love it! I like the color combo, too. It reminds me of beaded neclaces with elastic strings and all bunched up...neat! :D I'll have to play around with your parameter file...it looks it has interesting possibilities..:D

I'm curious as to how you started making this, as this kind of detail is beyond my capability; was it just trial and error, or did you have an equation for this beforehand?

Actually it was somewhere in the middle. I knew what sort of fractal I wanted to make, so I started with the base for that (spherical with cylinder) From then on it was experimentation.
Here's a starter flame if you want to make something like this. Copy it then once you open Apo past it in (CTRL+V):
